Instant Pot chana dal

I accidentally dumped in a lot more fenugreek than I intended to when I was improvising dal one night and it was really good. Sauteeing the greens with the tadka works well to wilt them while waiting for the dal to cook.

I rarely use my Instant Pot but I love it for this dish.

Note: this particular recipe is a note to my future self and has not been thoroughly tested.

Ingredients

For the dal:

  • 1/2

    onion

  • 1

    cup dried chana dal

  • 2 1/2

    cups water

  • turmeric

  • mango amchur powder

  • a lot of ground fenugreek

  • garlic powder

  • kashmiri chile

For the tadka/chonk:

  • ghee or oil

  • mustard seed

  • cumin seed

  • kashmiri chile

  • pinch asafoetida

To serve:

  • sauteed greens

  • rice

  • cilantro

  • lime juice

Instructions

  1. Pressure cook the dal

    Combine all of the ingredients in an Instant Pot. Cook for 20 minutes at high pressure and allow a 10 minute natural release.

  2. Make the tadka

    Meanwhile, heat ghee and spices until fragrant. Add in quick cooking chopped greens like spinach or swiss chard and cook together until wilted.

  3. Serve

    Stir tadka and greens into the cooked dal. Serve with rice, cilantro, and a squeeze of lime juice.
